La Cueva de las Manos (Spanish for Cave of Hands) hides in an isolated spot of the Argentine Patagonia, accessible via dirt roads that lead you to some of the earliest known forms of human art, dating back roughly 10,000 years.
This complex of caves and shelters is famous for (and gets its name from) the stenciled paintings of hands. The art in the cave is 9,000 to 13,000 years old. The age of the paintings was calculated from the remains of bone-made pipes used for spraying the paint on the wall of the cave to create silhouettes of hands.
The Cave of the Hands entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. The international scientific community considers the cave one of the most important sites of the earliest hunter-gatherer groups in South America.
