Artist's Description
Cell division. Coloured light micrograph of chromosomes (green) in a mammalian cell during the telophase stage of mitosis (cell division). During mitosis, the genetic material of a cell is duplicated, and two daughter cells are formed. Each daughter cell has a copy of the genetic material, carried on chromosomes, from the parent cell. Telophase is the final stage of cell division, in which the body (cytoplasm, not seen) of the parent cell cleaves. Here, the chromosomes have separated and have moved to opposite ends of the parent cell, which is starting to cleave. Magnification unknown.
