Description
Cell mitosis. Confocal fluorescence light micrograph composite showing 6 stages of mitotic cell division. At far left, the cell has completed the first stage of cell division known as interphase in which the chromosome number is doubled. During, prophase, spindle fibres (red) form as the nuclear membrane breaks down. At metaphase (second from left), the chromosomes (blue) align at the equator of the cell as the spindles pull the two sets of chromosomes apart during anaphase (third from left). During telophase, the cell begins to pinch in and divide (fifth from left) to break apart into two daughter cells (far right). The golgi apparatus is stained green. Magnification x300 when printed 10cm wide.
