Jeff, here's another thank you for featuring my silhouette "Cemetery and Tree" in your awesome group Silhouettes, one of my favorite areas of photography. Mike Nellums

Jeff, thanks so much for once again favoriting a sample of my silhouette photography. Mike Nellums

Wow! What a perfect silhouette image - Love the colors in that sky - Dave - V/F

Mike Nellums replied:

Thanks, Dave, for sending along such a complimentary comment - and a vote, too. I do appreciate it. All the best to you. Mike Nellums

This is an amazing shot Mike. You got great color in the sky mixed with the silhouett of the stones and i'm gonna take a guess and say shooting star in the sky? So much great stuff that works well together in the picture.

Mike Nellums replied:

Hi Darren, Thanks so much for posting and sharing your wonderful comment with me. I appreciate it very much. I'm glad you liked the photo. And yes, we all get lucky sometimes when shooting. I was lucky that the sunset was a dark orange sky. I was lucky there was a great tree to share the silhouetted gravestones. And yes, the vapor trail in the sky of a jet going by was PURE LUCK. Thanks again for your positive feedback. All the best to you. Mike Nellums

Mike Nellums replied:

Beautiful photograph, Mike. Has this image won First Place in a contest on FineArt? I see you have submitted it to the group I run, but I don't see a post on the Discussions page, and I don't see any comments regarding a First Place win. Please let me know. Thanks.

Mike Nellums replied:

Hi Kristin, Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your last email. I know I joined your group upon my recent First Place win in COLOR AND WATER contest which recently finished. What I might have done is inadvertently submitted the wrong photograph. Is there a way of checking the contest history of either the FAA member or any photograph to see if it has won a past contest? In the meantime, what I can do is submit the correct photograph which did win First Place in COLOR AND WATER. Sorry for the confusion.

Mike Nellums replied:

Hi Kristin, I just went back and found my posting of my First Place win on one of your Discussion pages. My posting was on06/25/2012. The correct photo can be seen from the URL listing in the body of the posting.I guess I posted the wrong image when I actually joined the group. I've removed "Cemetery and Tree' and put in my recent First Place win in the COLOR AND WATER contest. Hope this clears everything up. Mike

beautiful capture. The edges of the tree and head stones are very sharp! V

Mike Nellums replied:

Thanks, Melissa. I appreciate your kind comments. Mike

Mike, speaking honestly and truly..this is the image that I was longing to see for a long time, being fan of silhouette art, it has the pure beauty and mystery shrouded in this two colored image that has lots to tell..Voted + Fave'd)

Mike Nellums replied:

Hello, Bedros Thanks so much for your comments. It means so much to receive such positive strokes - especially from another artist such as yourself. I have always thought that "Cemetery and Tree" was one of my strongest photographs. I'm glad to see that others feel that way as well. Thanks again. Mike

I like the tombs becoming a silhouette against the golden sky. The jet looks like a shooting star! voted

Mike Nellums replied:

Hi Marian, Thanks so much for your comments. I, too, think the jet trail looks like a shooting star. I was very lucky to have it in the background. Mike

Mike, this is a most striking piece of visual art and it is due not merely because of the fact that it is a sharply resolved silhouetted photograph, nor merely because your pallet is a brilliant monochrome in the red-orange part of the spectrum ranging from nearly black burnt umber through red to orange to golden yellow contrasted against pure jet black but because of your subject matter and the way you chose to compose the shot. The top and the bottom of the shot are impenetrably dark. The middle is saturated with a rich warm bath of color penetrated by cemetery markers and a solitary tree standing sentinel in the right half and occupying most of that side of the photo. And in the center is a brilliant contrail of a passing jet meteoric in its brevity appearing to emerge from nothing to stand captured in time there above the tallest of the monoments. The thoughts this photograph evokes are timeless; questions of the temporality of human existence and observations of its relative brevity, the irony between legacies carved in stone versus that perpetualized in the woody flesh of a tree, the brilliant intensity to be found close to the ground versus the fading warmth to be found the further skyward the eye roams, the sensory impacts of the opaque mystery of death versus the opaque mystery of the heavens. The crosses and spires stand as testimonies of life defiant in the face of mortality. This photo is wonderful. It brings us into direct contemplation of the "ultimate questions' yet offers us no answers but what anyone can see. It is faithful to the human condition longing to belong and to have lasting value in a universe that without remorse simply does not have time to spare a single one of us. Kudos!!! F, V, L

Mike Nellums replied:

Wow, Charlie, what a comprehensive, insightful, and most of all intelligent critique of "Cemetery and Tree". I can't tell you what your analysis means to me. I'm blown away that someone would actually take the time to review my artwork as you have done. I don't know what to say other than thank you so much for your wonderful review. It's the most honest critique I've ever read. You should be a professional critic. Thanks again so much. Mike

Mike, Great capture love the bright sky but putting as the backdrop of a cemetery great idea. Love the great gothic and eerie feel you have brought to this photo. Great job. VOTED

Mike This is a Great Photograph, The contrast between life and death, living and dead, I love the colors Voted

Mike Nellums replied:

Hi Sue, The contrast between life and death is uncanny - especially with the jet trail in the sky in the distant background. Another affirmation of life. Mike

Pen Sherwood's Amitors artwork goes anywhere with Diana Kisselburg's words! Many years ago, my uncle Thomas (Tom) Phillip Hufford asked me to come up with a word the opposite of predator. Amitor is that word. Ami: Fr. friend, Amigo: Sp. friend, Amity: Eng. harmony, Ami: Formosa, Taiwan. Giraffe: non predatory animal unless young attacked. Butterflies: live, love, laugh, hope. Survive, thrive and inspire others. Pen Sherwood offered to do this Amtor artwork for free sharing the copyright with me for my Amitor concept. Amitor Tom would be so proud. Diana Hays Kisselburg
