Description
A view across the Pampa Rio Blanco to the colourful volcanic peaks of the Cerro Poderosa volcano (5670m / 18,600ft) in the far southwest of Bolivia. It always amazes me how these barren high altitude desert landscapes can have such a remarkable and varied range of colours, patterns and formations. The yellow and orange colours are often due to sulphur / sulfur; several old mines can be found high on the flanks of this and other volcanos in the area. Look closely and you can see a vicuna bottom left, a small wild camelid that is one of few animals to thrive in this landscape. The area is part of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve (Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Abaroa in Spanish, often referred to locally by its Spanish acronym REA) and on the route of the popular 3 day 4x4 tours between Uyuni and San Pedro de Atacama (in Chile).
