Description
8 Black and red Eastern red lacewing butterflies, Cethosia cydippe, with large red ovals and tiny white spots on their white-fringed black wings overlay another circular group of 6 muted members of this red lacewing clan of butterflies all on a middle blue background in this tropical rainforest nature mandala. Eastern red lacewing butterflies are native to Australia and New Guinea. As a warning to their predators their wings are decorated in contrasting red and black conspicuous colors telling their predators to be extremely careful, “You do not want to eat me because I taste bad!” This is known as "aposematic protection" also found in other animals. Artwork featured on the homepage of FAA artist's group "Wonder of Wings" 05/29/21. Artwork featured on the homepage of the FAA artist's group "Arte Per Passione - Passione Per L'arte" 06/02/21.
