Description
This was the second Southampton demonstration piece for day one of Wind Waves and Weather version 2011. There were 11 participants in the course- a very fun group.
We were still on Chantry Island and I had already painted Chantry Light. I had a request to demonstrate the handling of clouds and there was a towering cumulus to the north producing a shower. The tower was not very tall but the shower had a bit of an outflow footprint. There were also some old pieces of turbulent stratocumulus drifting along with the blustery north-westerly winds. I explained how I could deduce why these were “ old” clouds composed of large particles that caused Mie forward scattering to dominate. There were also some pieces of cirrus at higher elevations. To top it all off, a jet flew by leaving a contrail. As a result I happily included a lot of illustrations of clouds and colour in a single demonstration. I simply painted the sky as I saw it.
The ride back to Southampton on the “Peerless” was even rougher than in the morning. It was a good day though.
