Description
Have done so many paintings of Holy Cross or Red Rock Chapel as it is called by many for over two Decades, could almost do it with my eyes closed... 8=)
This was painted with Acrylic on Masonite...
The Church is designated as a Non-Denominational Church. It is the only church ever built in a National Park. It took an act of Congress to get permission, the architect was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright's.
The entrance which is not visible, is by a road which curves around behind the rocks and church to a parking lot in the rear.
The Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness is one of our favorite areas for Photos and Paintings. We can drive about 25 miles into the wilderness in different areas, but where the roads dead end, no vehicles are allowed. There are many hiking trails from various areas of the road including the end. Wilderness camping, fishing, etc is allowed, for 40-50 miles in the wilderness..

The Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness is a 47,194-acre wilderness area located within the Coconino National Forest in the U.S. state of Arizona.

The Wilderness is predominantly wind and water sculpted pinnacles, windows, arches, and slot canyons, and the red-rock cliffs of the Mogollon Rim that mark the edge of the Colorado Plateau. Bordered on the east by Sycamore Canyon Wilderness, the high mesas of Secret Mountain and Wilson Mountain jut out into the lower country and streams and creeks from the canyons drain into Oak Creek canyon and the Verde River.

NADINE & BOB, THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL PAINTING OF THE RED ROCK CHAPEL! THE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS BUILDING IS INCREDIBLE ESPECIALLY SITUATED WHERE IT IS! VERY UNIQUE, DIFFERENT, AND BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED IN THIS NATIONAL PARK SURROUNDED BY IT'S ROCKS AND CLIFFS! LES (F/V)

When painting the Chapel, we have a Projector, and so project the image of it on a canvas, then sketch it with charcoal on the canvas and the outlines of the rocks. Then have a Photo on a 20" computer screen next to the Canvas so we can see the details. This makes it much easier and faster than sketching from scratch.
