Description
I had one last morning in Charleston, South Carolina. Up early to catch a golden sunrise at Waterfront Park, there was another building I wanted to photograph at dawn when the rays of the sun were still welcoming on this wonderful building. This is the Charleston Town Hall. It has some wonderful features, the double entrance wrought iron staircase, the bulbous windows on the front of the facade as well as the wonderful moldings around the windows and doors. I have always loved this building. It represents everything I love about Charleston.
This charming building has a storied past.
On the site of a Colonial marketplace, this handsomely proportioned 1801 building first housed the Bank of the United States and then became Charleston's City Hall in 1818. The design is attributed to Charleston's Gabriel Manigault, a gentleman architect credited with introducing the Adam's style to the city after studying in Europe. A gallery in the Council Chamber on the second floor grew out of a custom of commissioning artists to paint famous visitors. The gallery includes a c. 1791 portrait of George Washington by John Trumbull (considered one of the best of Washington in his later years) and a portrait of President James Monroe by Samuel F. B. Morse.
