I love the artist and usually purchase her originals or prints and have been extremely satisfied with them, but this original and some others were sold so I purchased cards to frame. I have to comment that this card was a little dark and if it could be lightened a little, it would better represent the artwork. The artist is one of my favorites.

Artist's Description

Charlie Chaplin on location with his camera crew shooting "The Gold Rush," 1925-2009.

In early 1924 Chaplin shot snow footage near Truckee, California to simulate the Yukon gold rush of 1898, but used little of it in the completed film.

The movie was then shot on the backlot and sound stage at Charlie's Hollywood studio.

Chaplin considered "The Gold Rush" to be his finest film and the one he wanted to be remembered for. In 1942 he released a talking version with his narration and a musical score he wrote.

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
