The Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is one of the big cats, and inhabits southern and eastern Africa, as well as parts of Iran. Preferred habitat includes savannah, dry forest, and scrub forest. It is the fastest of all big cats and land mammals, reaching burst speeds of 70 miles per hour. In contrast to the larger Lion, Tiger, and Leopard, the Cheetah is lightly built and sleek, with long and thin legs, weighing about 45 to 160 pounds. Also in contrast to the other big cats, the Cheetah is diurnal, being active mainly during the day; the Lion, Tiger, and Leopard are nocturnal, being active mainly during the night. As a carnivore, the Cheetah's main prey includes small to medium-sized antelope and gazelle; in east Africa, the main prey is Thomson's gazelle. When a larger animal is targeted as prey, several Cheetahs will hunt as a group. The Cheetah population has been declining in recent years, due to habitat loss and human interference.
