Absolutely beautiful. Haven't chosen the perfect spot to display it yet, but it's a wonderful work of art I'm proud to display both for it's artistry and subject.

Bought for a fellow Navy veteran. He was beyond pleased, and so am I. Being able to choose such a unique mounting made the gift even "giftier" since it's so unique. Thanks - very pleased.

Sadly didn't turn out as nice as I had hoped. The picture is printed faintly and is hard to see well. Shipping and packaging was good.

Artist's Description

A traditional stone grandfather from Cheju Island in Korea is combined with graphical depictions of Hangul, the alphabet of Korea. This artwork is inspired by my husband's Peace Corps service on Cheju. Mixed media (handmade paper, metallic paint, photographs) in mesmerizing, complex layers on board. Created from the finest archival materials, with care, this artwork should last a lifetime and beyond. Framed in whitewash wood.

About Susan Gertz

Who am I and what's my art about? My formal education is as a biologist, with an emphasis in evolutionary ecology. One of my most vivid life experiences was learning at age 12 that the atoms within our bodies have been recycled for eons from stardust, dinosaurs, everything, and will continue to do so for untold time after we die. I was drawn to science, especially evolutionary biology, out of a deep sense of kinship and respect for all the life with which we share our planet—especially life that is tiny, slow, slimy, or strange. A strong connection with my Jewish heritage also speaks to my sense of a sacred Earth, or “admat kodesh,” meaning holy ground in Hebrew. My artwork emerges from these experiences and feelings.
