Cancer of the esophagus ultimately killed him. Only after extended coughing spells, which lasted up to 30 minutes, did he consent to see a doctor.
The esophagus 'is the tubular canal that leads from the throat to the stomach. His drinking and smoking had certainly increased the chances of getting the disease which is difficult to detect. Symptoms do not appear until the cancer has penetrated the nearby lymph nodes and from there spread dangerously through the body. Then, as now, the prognosis is poor and victims have a very high fatality rate.'
