A Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) feeds in the shallows of Lake Chungara in the spectacular Lauca National Park in the far north of Chile on a stormy afternoon. The Chilean flamingo is the most widespread of the 3 South American flamingo species, its unusual grey legs with red feet and knees are very distinctive. At 4,517m /14,820ft Chungara is one of the highest lakes in South America and covers approx 21.5 square km / 8.3 sq miles. The peak in the centre is Quisi Quisini (often written K'isi K'isini), a 5,536m / 18,163 ft high extinct volcano on the Bolivia border. The Park is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
