Image too soft, looks poor 2nd generation or good 3rd generation. Unsuitable for framing.

Artist's Description

Chill Wills was Oscar nominated for his role as sidekick "Beekeeper" to John Wayne's Davy Crockett in "The Alamo." Wills hired the veteran press agent, with the improbable name of W.S. "Bow-Wow" Wojciechowicz, to orchestrate his Oscar campaign. Only it backfired badly with two ill advised ads. The first had a picture of Chill with the alphabetized list of every academy member. The text read: "Win, lose or draw, you're all my cousins and I love you all." Groucho Marx ran his own ad in the "Hollywood Reporter" saying that he was not Wills' cousin and voted for Sal Mineo in "Exodus" instead. That same day the "Reporter" ran a second "Bow-Wow" ad. According to the "Los Angeles Times" this had a photo of Wills in buckskin breeches superimposed over a picture of the cast of "The Alamo." The ad line read: "We of 'The Alamo' cast are praying harder - than the real Texans prayed for their lives in the Alamo - for Chill Wills to win the Oscar as best supporting actor. Cousin Chill's acti...

About David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
