Snake wine is a traditional alcoholic beverage consumed in Southeast Asia. The earliest records of snake wine date back to the Western Zhou Dynasty (~770 BC), China. This traditional jar of snake wine has been filled with the heads of local snakes, including King Cobras, Ophiophagus hannah. Traditional medicine in China believes that the consumer of snake wine is empowered with strength, vitality, health, and the spirit of the snake. The wine is used to treat medical problems ranging from hair loss to lack of sexual vigor. In particular, venomous snakes are targeted to make this beverage, including endangered species.
