Description
The country of Montenegro is in southeastern Europe. It borders the countries of Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast and Albania to the south-east.
Montenegro, whose name means Black Mountains, boasts stunning mountainous landscapes, dramatic coast lines, historic monuments, and picturesque medieval walled towns such as Perast, pictured here.
Perast lies beneath the hill of St. Elijah on a cape that separates the Bay of Risano from the Bay of Kotor. It overlooks the Verige strait which is the narrowest part of the Bay of Kotor.
When sailing from the Adriatic Sea (the part of the Mediterranean that is east of Italy) to the town of Kotor, you travel on winding fjords with beautiful scenery. It has much of the look and feel of Scandinavian fjords.
The Old Town of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is well worth a visit. But I definitely recommend traveling there by water, as the sail to Kotor was a highlight of an Adriatic cruise I took which began in Venice and ended in Rome.
