Description
The last full moon of 2014, known as the Cold Moon, was incredibly bright as it rose over the California redwoods. I captured this image as it created a silhouette of a pair of branch tips overhead.
The Cold Moon is quite often the best full moon to photograph in the Northern Hemisphere, since the cold temperatures tend to reduce haze in the atmosphere, making the view of the night sky clearer.
No matter what phase or time of year, the moon is one of my favorite astrophotography subjects. The Cutten area of Eureka, California is an ideal place for astronomy and astral photography, thanks to its mild climate and relatively high elevation. The challenge is to find an area where you can see between the towering redwood trees. If you can, you'll have a spectacular view of the stars and the planets.
Imagine how beautiful this dramatic moon photo will look on your home or office wall!
