Molto surreale complimenti.

Very unusual painting, Ross. It is indeed unfortunate that it was stolen. The use of positive and negative as a metaphor, especially to highlight the rift betwen the northern states and the southern states while he was president and the pressure that he was no doubt under to resolve the differences, is useful and effective. The slave boat adds the crowning touch as a statement to the already evocative work.

Artist's Description

This is one of my ļæ½Made in Americaļæ½ interpretive compositions. Abraham Lincolnļæ½s struggle during the civil war to keep America united makes for a special time in our history as a nation. I painted his face both positive & negative for the personal stress he personally endured. The north & south flags have bullet holes bleeding red behind Lincoln. The shape at the base of the composition is a schematic of how slaves were typically loaded on a slave ship. This interpretation speaks volumes about the conflict and Americas blood loss to end slavery.

My approach is what I refer to as “interpretative realism”. I am focused on “interpretive” paintings of people, places, history, or events. Each has a story to tell, some serious and some with a bit of humor, but each are an important reason for my design and painting journey to begin. The challenge of interpreting a new concept is what inspires me to begin a design and a new painting.
