Description
Gallstone. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through the abdomen, showing a gallstone (calculus) obstructing the bile duct. The large yellow organ is the liver. The green circle inside it is the gall bladder, where bile collects. A gallstone (pink) has blocked the gall bladder's outlet duct, causing the bladder to enlarge. A vertebra of the spine is at lower centre (pink); on either side of this are the C- shaped kidneys (yellow). A gallstone develops when a chemical imbalance occurs in bile. Only about 20% of gallstones cause symptoms, mainly in overweight people. They can be removed with drugs or shockwave treatment that shatters the stones.
