Description
Striated muscle. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of human striated muscle fibres. Striated muscle occurs in all skeletal muscles and its movement is under conscious (voluntary) control. Several muscle fibres are seen running diagonally from lower left to upper right, each being an elongated muscle cell. In each of these fibres can be seen cross-striations. These regular cross-striations are formed from myofibrils, structures of contractile proteins which cause the muscle cell to contract and relax. Magnification x1400 at 6x7cm size.
