Broken kneecap. Coloured X-ray showing a patella or kneecap fractured into two pieces (top left). The kneecap is a triangular bone lying at the front of the knee joint which is formed by the femur or thigh bone (top) and tibia (larger bone at bottom). The kneecap is held in position by the lower end of the quadriceps muscle and by the patellar tendon which attaches the patella to the tibia. This type of fracture is usually caused by a direct blow. Most fractures of the patella are treated surgically because it does not easily heal naturally. The thin bone at bottom is the fibula.
