Artist's Description
Comet of 1665. Historical illustration of the comet of March and April 1665, seen over the German city of Augsburg. It is shown in the constellations of Pegasus and Cygnus, represented as a winged horse and swan. The Moon is at right, with Jupiter on the horizon at lower right. North is at left. This comet was the second one seen in 1665, following the comet of 1664-5. This second comet, known by modern astronomers as C/1665 F1, was observed by many astronomers worldwide. These included Johannes Hevelius in Gdansk, astronomers in China, Francois-Joseph Le Mercier in Canada, Adrien Auzout and Pierre Petit in Paris, and Isaac Newton in London.
