Description
Common crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) female. The common crossbill inhabits coniferous forests in northern North America and Eurasia. The more northern populations migrate south for the winter. The bird takes its name from its unusual bill, which has crossed tips. This adaptation allows it to open pine cones, its main food. It also feeds on insects. Photographed in north-eastern Spain.
