Description

The Common Jackal (Canis aureus), also called "Golden Jackal", is found in Kenya, Tanzania and Somalia, and has the appearance of a fox. It is found in areas of bush and scrub, rocky hillsides, and open grassland. The senses of smell, hearing and sight are very sensitive in the Common Jackal. It feeds mostly at dusk and dawn on small mammals (like rodents), lizards, small birds, insects, some fruit and carrion. The Common Jackal hunts mostly alone or in pairs.

This Common Jackal resting in the grass was photographed at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, in Tanzania on 1-13-2016. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR2 telephoto lens to capture this image.
