Description
Confederation Bridge by Karen Cook - If you are headed to Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province, for centuries you only had one option...boat. But since 1997, you have another option, and that is the engineering marvel known as the Confederation Bridge.
Opened for use in 1997, the Confederation Bridge, or Fixed Link fulfilled a promise made to the residents of Prince Edward Island that one day they would be joined to the rest of Canada by a permanent connection.
The bridge is an engineering feat, and is the longest bridge in the world over ice-covered water. Built to last for 100 years, at a cost of $1 billion,it is a multi-span concrete box girder design, with high arches built near the center of the 7 mile crossing, so that large ships may pass safely beneath.
Driving across it is amazing! Sturdy barriers offer a slightly hidden view of the swirling waters below. As you near the island, its famous red clay is visible on her shorelines. As you leave the island, the large granite boulders form a line of defense for the town of Borden-Carleton and its harbor.
