A quiet moment of contemplation at Sera Monastery, Tibet. Sera Monastery, ear Lhasa, was founded in 1419 and evolved into one of the great "university monasteries" in Tibet. Prior to 1959, the monastery was home to around 6000 monks. The monastery suffered extensive damage in the 1959 revolt; hundreds of monks were killed at this time, and many of the survivors fled to India. The unrest in Tibet in 2008 further thinned the number of monks at Sera, and it is thought that fewer than 300 monks are now in residence. We were privileged to attend one of the debating sessions at the monastery in 2013. These debates, between a questioner and a defender, are intended to help the monks attain higher mastery of Buddhist doctrine. They are surprisingly lively - and even raucous - events. This monk had been in the thick of the debates, and then stepped aside into a quiet part of the courtyard for a few moments of contemplation before rejoining the fray.

I am a retired geologist with a long-standing passion for photography. I am generally drawn to interesting textures and lighting wherever I find them, but most of my photographic efforts occur outdoors. I love to work in black and white, but some images still cry out for color.
