Description
Much of the other-worldly beauty of Toadstool Geologic Park is due to contrasts, as seen in this landscape. The foreground soil is exposed because the vegetation cover is sparse: prairie grasses and some hardy shrubs are about all that can grow here. Beyond this flat expanse a rocky butte rises, its siltstone, shale, and sandstone sides marked by ages of erosion. And on this day, an impending thunderstorm added interest and color to the sky. The United States Forest Service oversees this small park in the Oglala National Grasslands in northwestern Nebraska.
