This is a photo I took of a young Red-tailed Hawk [Buteo jamaicensis]. He comes to hunt on my property on a regular basis.

One hot July day when the temperatures were over 100, he spotted the sprinklers running in my back yard and came in to cool off.

The Red-tailed Hawk is one of the largest birds in North America, weighing in at about 3.5 to 4 pounds, with the female being larger than the male. They are known for their brick-colored tails, but there are 14 subspecies with various colorations, and not all of them have the characteristic red tail.
