Description
Coventry City made their home at Highfield Road from 1899 until 2005. Peak capacity always around 50,000 in the mid 1960's when the ground was renovated under the leadership of Jimmy Hill. The club was one of the first to consider hospitality to be part of the role the ground had to fulfill and the fan experience was taken into consideration for perhaps the first time. When the ground closed in 2005 capacity was just under 23,500.
When Coventry City was relegated from the Premier League in 2001 Highfield Road had been a top flight ground for 34 consecutive seasons, ranking it in fourth place at that time and ahead of Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and other grounds of bigger clubs.
Highfield Road hosted the fourth and decisive replay of the 1980 FA Cup Semi-Final between Arsenal and Liverpool. The result was 1-0 to Arsenal.
Highfield Road was the first ground in the English Football League to have an all-seat layout in 1981. This experiment last couple of seasons until hooliganism and economics led to a return of the terraces by 1985.
The city of Coventry suffered extensive damage during World War Two aerial bombing and three bombs destroyed the pitch at Highfield Road in 1940.
