The great Western cattle drives of the late 19th century brought together a diverse group of men, including freed slaves and confederate war veterans. Longhorn cattle were driven north from Texas to reach the railheads at Abilene and Dodge City or to feed on the lush grass of the high plains. And while crossing such an expansive and lonely landscape, men will dream. In 1910 Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads by John A. Lomax introduced the country to the music of the American West, and helped propel the cowboy to iconic status.

Paula McHugh has created a series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes executed in egg tempera and oils. McHughs compositions portray the dynamic force of memory, of people and places that have blazed a trail before us. She is inspired by the American Regionalist Movement of painters, Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Woods, plus the early black and white photography of the 20th century. When she looks back in time into the faces of individuals, long deceased, it reminds her of the power of inviting the ancestors to enter our times so we can again feel the "long story" often missing in our fractured modern lives.
