love this greeting card
I was inspired to paint this canvas on a recent trip to Mexico's Federal District where I saw the Aztec stone disc (discovered at the Templo Mayor 34 years ago when work to shore up the sinking Spanish Basilica were undertaken) of Coyolxauhqui, the goddess of the Milky Way.
The story is that the goddess became pregnant late in life which embarrassed her children who cut off her limbs & head. The baby she was pregnant with was born anyway & in full armour. He killed the 400 brothers & sisters who had attacked their mother & threw them into the sky where they became the Milky Way & her decapitated head became the moon.
I am a second generation painter & sculptor, I guess as close as I can come to describing my 'style' would be that I work in the Renaissance tradition with Impressionist influence. Although I love the jewel-like quality in the high finish of say, 17th century Dutch genre painting, in my own work I have discovered over the years, I ruin more paintings by overwork than by quitting too soon. I like to keep the process evident, the brushstroke visible & in answer to the difficult question, what is art? I like the definition: Art is knowing when to stop...
