This caracara flew in front of our car and perched on a nearby tree near Manor, Texas. Caracaras are principally birds of South and Central America, just reaching the United States only in Arizona, Texas, and Florida. They are birds of prey in the family Falconidae. A tropical falcon version of a vulture, the Crested Caracara are not fast-flying aerial hunters, but are comparatively slow and are often scavengers. They are birds of open country, where they are often seen at carrion with vultures.
