The artist is my son and is very talented. In high school he was accepted by Chicago Art Institute but couldn’t afford the tuition. He graduated from Fredonia State University with a Fine Art degree.
An osprey watching the sunset and lightning at Crystal Beach in Florida. This was one of the rare times to capture lightning while the sun was setting.
While stationed in California with the Navy's JAG Corps, Steve was inspired by the majestic beauty of the state and developed a passion for photography. Upon returning to Florida, photography remained Steve's artistic outlet with a focus on lightning storms, natural surroundings and wildlife. Steve has relocated to New Mexico and is capturing the western spirit. He has won numerous awards for his photography. His work has been published in the Tampa Bay Magazine, including the cover of it's Sept/Oct issue.

An awesome capture, Stephen. How do you capture your phenomenal lightning photographs? I have tried setting up my tripod to capture lightning, but it always seems to be out of reach of my camera.
Stephen Whalen replied:
Hi Charles - a lot of luck is involved but when the lightning is striking fairly close I set up my tripod - set the camera to F8, ISO set at 100 to 200, manual focus, and manual/bulb. I use a remote clicker for the shutter and click open the shutter for between 30 to 60 seconds. For the focus I pick a distant light - such as a house, condo, or channel marker, etc, and focus as sharp as I can on that object. While the shutter is open hopefully a strike comes into the frame. I'm not strict on how long I leave the shutter open. I shoot in RAW rather than JPG which allows a wider range of adjustment in PhotoShop - almost always the exposure has to be adjusted to enhance other background features such as boats, trees, etc. Let me know if you have any questions.
