Description
While attending the Apple Valley Airshow in the California high desert this Curtis P40 Warhawk caught my eye it waited on the tarmac to be refueled for its next flight.
The bold image of the airplanes profile positioned against the open desert in in the background was so striking that it moved me to capture the image despite the blistering 115 degree summer heat out on the flightline.
The P40 has an interesting wartime history. This particular airplane is decked out in the destinctive paint scheme of the Flying Tiger Squadron. The group consisted of three fighter squadrons of around 30 aircraft each. It trained in Burma before the American entry into World War II with the mission of defending China against Japanese forces.
The group first saw combat on 20 December 1941, 12 days after Pearl Harbor.
