Description
This Heliconia Acuminata is known as the false Bird of Paradise, and is a native to the north western region of South America. Unlike the tropical Bird of Paradise we’re used to seeing, and some other types of Heliconia, the Acuminata’s flowers grow upward.
These flowers, cupped in the outer shell, secrete a sweet nectar that attracts birds. The cup –shaped flowers hold water for insects and birds. Hummingbirds are particularly fond of this plant. You might see a Heliconia dripping with fluid. It’s normal. It is a national flower of Bolivia.
