I started working on �The Bad Place� in early 2005. My concept was a series of interrelated artworks that would provide the bones of a story that the viewers could organize and tell for themselves. The subject matter was to be the eternal struggle of Good vs. Evil. I began by developing a broad iconography of traditional Christian images, some Spanish Colonial imagery, a dollop of Mexican retablo art, along with a liberal dusting of vodun, mojo, gris-gris, and some general creepiness for good measure. I chose as the embodiment of Evil a young boy, whom I referred to as �The Mage� � an ancient evil bent on destruction and mayhem. The icon of Good was a young girl, whom I eventually began to think of as �Vanessa� � well, I had to call her something.
