Dark speckled garnet, crimson red and maroon lilies, buds and blooms in an unusual composition with green leaves and a loose background leading down into white paper are ready for Valentine's Day.

Lilies are some of my favorite flowers, and I enjoyed painting the rich, bloody and almost monochromatic red stars, for the shapes, color and texture. These would be very dramatic in the right setting, which could be anything from fairly traditional to downright gothic.

The symbolism of a red garnet lily would be the combination of the different qualities of red, garnet and lily. To give or receive a red garnet lily would be drawing attention to purity, true fidelity and love. It would be a symbol of good feelings and attributes.

When you want to draw attention to something, red is your color of choice. It signifies energy, power or strength, and determination. For these reasons you will find red as part of the flags that represent many countries.

Red is also the color of love and passion. The celebration of Valentine's Day is an example of the significance of red to portray these emotions. The Chinese use red for luck and in celebrations. Red is the color of choice for weddings in India, as their culture believes it is the color of purity.

Garnets have a variety of meanings, from virtue, truth and fidelity to guidance and protection. In religious cultures it represents Christ's blood or the fourth heaven. If your birthday is in January, garnets are the symbol of your birth month.
