Glorious, fleeting first light illuminating a row of wildflowers under a Desert Ironwood tree (Olneya tesota) at Joshua Tree National Park. The wildflowers are Brittlebush (Encelia farinosa), Desert Dandelion (Malacothrix glabrata), Tidy Tips (Layia platyglossa) and Arizona lupine (Lupinus arizonicus). Thanks to Sonie Sampson and Steve Mudge of Facebook’s California Native Plant Society group for help with identifying the tree.

I arrived at this pre-scouted location well before twilight, in the wee hours, composed the scene and waited for the sunrise. At first, the sunlight was barely noticeable, and then it gradually illuminated the landscape. This was suddenly followed by almost blinding sunlight illuminating the wildflowers, the tree and landscape. The glorious early morning light was very fleeting and I managed to snap a few pictures.

I find the beauty of JTNP to be quite subtle. You don’t have overly saturated colors of wildflowers such the California Poppy at other California desert locations. The colors of wildflowers at JTNP are gentle and understated, as in this picture.

To the potential buyer: At 100%, this has incredible amount of detail. I would recommend printing this in as large a size that you can afford.
