The Road of No Return
During the last purge -
when the Council decided it was time
to clean out another third of the useless -
they didn't, for some reason, kill us.
Usually they do.
We don't contribute, we only take.
But this time they didn't.
When they came to the hospital
they took all us crazies
who'd tried suicide and failed
and resettled us on
The Road of No Return.
These apartments must've belonged
to the entitled who'd fallen out of favor.
It's a pretty nice place, really, or it would be
if this was a normal world.
But we've been condemned to passive attrition.
I'm guessing there are some real sadists
on the selection committee.
I heard they even bet on who's going to be alive
from month to month.
We're free to come and go as long
as we stay in our sector
and the food truck rolls through on schedule;
we stock up on what we need to get by
'til the next time.
But we don't see any doctors
and nobody's taking meds.
It gets noisy and there're fights.
Sometimes somebody gets even gets killed.
And the balconies are tempting, too.
The deathmobile comes by
once a week to collect the bodies.
I try best I can to keep it together,
and so far so good.
But I only walk down to the end of the street
on really good days,
because the only thing there is a huge chasm.
When the voices start whispering I lock myself inside
and crawl under the covers 'til they stop,
because even though it's not much of a life,
I really don't want to jump.
Plenty do, and when that happens
some new nut moves in.
But I'm going to beat this game;
I wasn't born to be somebody's bet.
