Deep Time 5 is one of a series of paintings in which I'm depicting vast time spans, as tectonic plates shift and flow over and under each other. Morphing, rising, sinking, encoding life-forms and eras as they evolve and then become enfolded. Dimensions and matrices emerge and then are hidden. The land continually recording. Ice ages advance and recede, heat rises and sinks, seas and watercourses come and go, mountains rise and fall, deserts and jungles appear and disappear as the entire living planet flows through deep time. There are great secrets hidden in this story. In Tobago I heard tell of a magical pool high up in the densely rainforested mountains - so deep that if you were to jump in you'd come out in the island of Grenada.
The cubist-like style I've used evokes a 'Dream-Time' atmosphere and gives the sense of multiple layers and perspectives both spatially and through the dimension of time. Each painting of this series has a distinct feeling tone but all together they evoke for me profound feelings of mystery and wonder in this world, which has not just existed but lived, breathed, pulsed and danced around the sun for billions of years.
