Description
The Sonoran Desert which Arizona is a part of, is a large desert which covers large portions of the Southwestern United States, including southern California and the Baja California area as well as the Mexican-US border area.
The Sonoran is the only place in the world where the famous saguaro grows in the wild. The saguaro is known for having a variety of arms that grow tall, 30-80 feet, in odd shapes and sizes. Pictures of these are featured in sunset photos, perhaps similar to the one you are now viewing. They are protected in Arizona and require a special license to obtain one.
Other cacti, such as cholla, prickly pear, organ pipe, barrel and beavertail and fishhook are abundant also. All require little water to survive the desert heat and most can cause you discomfort if bumped into from the sharp spines that extrude from the plant.
