Artist's Description

The Life's work of Julie Von Knorr Wedekind (Aunt Jula) contains over 30,000 photographs. Spanning 51 years from 1917 – 1968 her work artistically portrays life in Germany, with an emphasis in Bavaria where she lived. Her diverse subjects include traditional celebrations, religious ceremonies, regional agriculture, and bustling market places, to name only a few. After being lost from the public for nearly 40 years this important vast collection is being preserved, archived, and presented.

About Julie Von Knorr Wedekind

Born in Berlin on December 24th, 1883 Julie (Jula) Von Knorr Wedekind was the fourth of five siblings. Her father, Paul (Paolo) Justus Wedekind, was a German diplomat to Italy as well as an important industrialist with ties to Standard Oil. He instilled Jula with a passion for nature and hunting. They would often hunt elk, deer, and boar together on Paolo's 3500-acre estate (Friedrichswalde) in Northern Germany. Jula continued to hunt in Bavaria and the Alps into her old age, and This trips where often the subject of her photography. In 1906 Jula married Fritz Adolf Wolf Von Knorr, a captain in the German Navy, and soon bore their only child, Wolf. Wolf, who served in Japan with his father, died in a motorcycle accident at age 21. In...
