Description
Within and on the ceiling of the Gallery of the Candelabras in the Museo Pio-Clementino of the Vatican Museums are a sequence of spectacular paintings by Ludwig Seitz (1844ā1908), including this, āDivine Grace And The Human Worksā circa 1887. Divine Grace and the Human Works exemplifies an Angel showing the Sun to an old laboring man. Without the Sun, the laborer`s works are useless. Just as the Sun brings about the material works of man, Grace vivifies and sanctifies the works of the Spirit
Tourists being herded through the Vatican Museums will probably go through the long and narrow Gallery of the Candelabra, (262 ft. long) named after the eight magnificent candelabra of white marble within. The Gallery was commissioned and opened by Pope Pius VI in 1761
At present it contains many fine works of Roman antique sculpture. Therefore the artwork on the walls and ceilings tend to go unnoticed. They blur into the myriad of the beautiful and fascinating objects in view and as one`s concentration is disturbed by the jostling about and movement of the crowd.
The Gallery was restored by Pope Leo XIII in 1883-7, and he commissioned the artist Ludwig Seitz (1844-1908) (Inspector of the Pontifical Galleries of Painting) for the frecoes on the ceiling (1883-87). Seitz, a German artist born in Rome and the Inspector of the Galleries of Paintings is responsible for the longest and most important series on the ceiling.
The Vatican is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
