Just stumbled across this fascinating shot again, oh interesting! It looked like a large fighting eel, but the cormorant must have been hungry! Still, it seems difficult to me that the bird can deal with this thing! So the bird was actually able to fit (swallowed alive?!) that entirely down it's long/skinny throat completely somehow?? I have never witnessed an event like this before. I feel somewhat perplexed over how it actually happens, wouldn't the eel stand a chance of escaping (it's bendy/slimy body to even turn around?) or damaging (wriggling, biting, etc.) the bird's stomach/throat if eaten in that condition?! It’s hard for me to imagine that the formidable-looking eel (wouldn't the prey also go into a desperate "survival mode" once it realized that it hit the stomach?) Doesn't stand a chance of turning around in the elastic gullet and how the bird can keep down/digest such an object with no issues? I have also heard eel produce a lot of slime that can act as a protective coating and make them quite slippery! I don't have much knowledge about these events and am mostly curious, I appreciate any feedback/explanation. Sorry for all of the questions, have a good week ;)

Susie Peek replied:

It is quite amazing to watch .. the cormorant tosses the eel into the air several times and is lightening fast so that it doesn't get away .. eventually he seems to position the eel to be coming back down head first and that's when he opens up wide and swallows it straight down - quite an amazing feat of nature! I have no idea how they manage to fit in the bird's stomach but have seen them dive down for even more eels in one feeding!

Amazing capture! That looks like a huge eel caught and doesn't look to happy staring down its captor's throat here! So does the bird really manage to win the battle and gulp that whole thing okay? Does the eel put up a good fight, if eaten does the unlucky prey get swallowed wriggling/twisting all the way down as well?!

Susie Peek replied:

Thanks Kyle .. it was amazing to watch the struggle but yes, the cormorant won in the end .. and was too heavy to fly back to the rocks for a while .. I expect that meal kept him pretty full for a while!

Susie Peek replied:

Hi Kyle .. I have no idea how they manage this --or why they don't suffocate as the eel goes down the throat .. it is fascinating (if a little sad!) to watch the poor eel struggle so hard to survive .. if you google or youtube it you can watch them in action ... they also manage to eat very large fish .. fascinating nature!

Wow - I didn't realise it was going to be that big! It's a gift for a young member of the family - I think he'll be thrilled as he's a tractor fanatic at 6 years old. A practical gift too. The towel has a smoother upper side so it'll be more comfortable to sit on at the beach. It seems to have a thick absorbent power so no usual skinny beach towel.

Perfect gift for my college niece!!! They love to have their towels for spring break! Highly recommend. I recently bought round beach towels at a major retailer. The quality from fineartamerica far surpasses it! The artwork on the towel is vibrant and attractive. Love it!
