Description
Doorway into the Past
This is obviously an old house that has been abandoned. It is on South Tropical Trail on Merritt Island, Florida. Tropical Trail is one of the oldest road on the island. I have painted and photographed up and down the length of it.
This old house has intrigued me for quite a while. I hope to do a plein air painting of it some day. I love all the basic rectangular shapes. The colors and textures are unique. Shapes within shapes make for an almost abstract pattern. Warm colors against cool and neutral colors add to the composition.
I stopped by there a couple time to ask about it's history from people I have seen walking or working near-by. Unfortunately, I haven't found anyone, who knew anything about it. Old orange groves used to surround it. Lots of big oak trees festooned with Spanish moss surround it, now.
It is in a gentrified neighborhood. I expect that it's days are numbered. I imagine that it will eventually be razed and replaced. It seems that has happened so often when I have painted an old building or tree. I almost feel as if I cast the spell of doom upon some of these old subjects. I am almost frightened to paint it.
I wonder what stories this old house could tell. I bet that it has a lot of interesting ones.
