This is a strange find indeed. A double bird of paradise, with one flower growing out of the spathe of another,both off the same stalk. They have the usual brilliant colors of orange, pink, red, yellow, with the center stamen either blue or purple.This image is squared for my Square Format gallery. Another gorgeous image is available in the Flowers and Exotics gallery.The Latin name of the Bird of Paradise is Strelitzia. It is a member of the plant family Strelitziaceae. It was names Bird of Paradise because of it look similar to a bird. In South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower and is featured on the reverse of the 50 cent coin.The flowers are produced in a horizontal inflorescence emerging from a stout spathe.
