This piece is truly special... You are viewing an incredibly rare trilobite pendant, in which one small fossilized Elrathia kingi (trilobite species) laid to rest on top of another large trilobite, and were naturally preserved this way-- together for eternity. I personally (and painstakingly) extracted this exquisite fossil from a mortality plate; a slice of shale in which multiple organisms perished, nearly half a billion years ago (this plate was photographed as the 5th image shown prior to excavation of the fossils). Trilobites were among the earliest animals to appear on Earth and now you can wear this exquisite piece of natural history, and carry it with you, wherever you go.
This fossil was wrapped in 0.925 Sterling silver-filled wire and suspended on a 20"-long black leather cord (may be substituted for a silver chain, upon request for no additional charge). The bail was woven by-hand and a few, small spiral embellishments were added to it's base. The larger of the two trilobites is a particularly fine specimen with well-preserved librigena ("cheeks") which are often missing from inferior specimens. Each trilobite measures 35x28mm (1.4" x 1.1") and 11x8mm (0.4" x 0.3"), respectively while the whole pendant, base to bail, measures 58x32x19mm (2.3" x 1.3" x 0.7").
The original mortality plate from which this fossil was extracted, came from the Wheeler Shale, located in Millard County, near Antelope Springs, Utah. Trilobites disappeared from the face of the Earth in a mass extinction that occurred approximately 250 million years, just prior to the rise of the earliest dinosaurs in the fossil record. Trilobites evolved on Earth approximately 540 million years ago.
