Description
The Colorado River is smooth and gentle in the run through Glen Canyon and on past Lee's Ferry in Northern Arizona where the rafting and boat trips down the Grand Canyon embark. One mile later the river encounters the rocks at One-Mile Riffle where this photograph was made on a grey, cloudy day.
Before the construction of Glen Canyon Dam a few miles upstream, the Colorado river ran a muddy brownish-red due to the sediments it carried. Now the sediments are trapped behind the dam, and the water is much cooler, hence the bright green coloration.
Lee's Ferry was previously famous as the only crossing of the Colorado River for hundreds of miles in each direction, and it is where Paria Canyon meets Glen Canyon to become Marble Canyon, then to become the Grand Canyon farther downstream. This point on the Colorado River is generally considered to be the start of the Grand Canyon, and has been called "both the physical and spiritual heart of water history in the arid American West" by no less than Edward Abbey, the great wordsmith of the American West.
The entirety of the Grand Canyon, from Lee's Ferry to the end at Lake Mead is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
