They married too young, he didn't want children, her life felt empty, her friends had bigger houses, nicer clothes, more successful husbands...alcohol cooled her over-active pre-frontal cortex.

This painting is so strange-beautiful. It makes me so sad and yet so...um, not happy, but...it's like the sculpture "Cupid and Psyche." Sublime. She's a mess. She doesn't understand how she got to this point, having tripped and fallen over her own feet with such violence that she lost a shoe. Her body is slack with drunkenness, and yet she looks up at him, with the vulnerability and openness that only a drunk person can bare. Tonight he's her savior, her hero. And he's so tender, despite the fact that she's a rather disgusting mess. He's looking into her eyes, trying to see that she is going to be all right. He still cares about her as a person, holding her by the arms instead of under her breasts. He's trying to pull her to the door, "Please try to get up. Let's go. Everything will be better in the morning." "Oh Darling," she slurs, "I don't know if I can. You're too good for me. I love you...." Then the bottle, straight and angry as an abusive lover, charges into her sight. "...but there's just a little bit left in the bottle if you could reach it for me." GW Smith, you really have a magnificently expressive way with figures!
